AcademicsREADING: There will be time every day for your child to read independently in our classroom. Our district uses the Making Meaning Curriculum, in which nonfiction and fiction read aloud books will be used to teach your child various comprehension strategies as well as how to read and think at a high level. In addition, our 2nd grade team works together to create lessons that help students specifically meet each Minnesota reading standard. Please also make time for your child to read at home every night for 20 minutes. Your child will record his/her nightly reading on a Monthly Reading Calendar which can be turned in for a reward at the end of each month!
WRITING: Our Being a Writer curriculum correlates with our Making Meaning reading curriculum. It uses authentic children’s literature to teach the writing process and help students develop their own voice as writers. There are regular opportunities for discussion, to share writing with classmates, and students to “publish” their work. WORD WORK: This year, our district is implementing the Words Their Way curriculum. In the fall, I'll give a spelling inventory that helps find your child's spelling stage. Then, we'll work on word sorts and other activities to help all students build on their spelling knowledge. MATH: We use the Bridges in Mathematics program. This program helps make math meaningful and exciting by teaching and reinforcing many skills through math workstation games. Students will focus on addition and subtraction, place value, shapes, and length measurement. Visit this page for additional resources, games, and apps you can use at home. SOCIAL STUDIES: Students will continue to build their foundational understanding in the disciplines of citizenship and government, economics, geography, and history. SCIENCE: We use the Macmillan/McGraw-Hill series called Science: A Closer Look. Topics of study include science skills and methods, weather, plants, matter (solids, liquids, and gases), and forces. Visit this page and click on the 2nd grade text book for activities that go along with each of our units. |
